What does Chaddesden Wood mean to you?

Perhaps it is somewhere you walk your dog, or take the children on the way to school or to the shops, maybe you just like to stroll round it for exercise and relaxation or perhaps you have never given any thought to it! Perhaps you are one of the kind people who pick up litter in the wood or put food out for the birds. Did you know that Chaddesden Wood is Derby City’s only surviving example of Ancient Oak Woodland and was Derby's first Local Nature Reserve? The spring bluebells and frogspawn, summer woodland birds, autumn fungi and winter walks provide us with a fascinating insight into what Derby countryside is like and it's in Oakwood.

A few local residents have expressed an interest in forming a Friends Group to help the owners, Derby City Council, protect the woodland. But we need your help. There is an opportunity for you to be part of the discussions about a forthcoming access improvement plan, a new nature trail leaflet and nature conservation management proposals.

If you would like to be involved please contact David Winslow, Parks Inspector, Environmental Services, 15, Stores Road, Derby, DE21 4BD by post, telephone on 07792 826364, or email him at:mailto:David.Winslow@derby.gov.uk

The idea is that the Friends Group would like to help facilitate action, communicate opportunities and use education as a tool to determine a positive future for our wild spaces. Can you help? The WildDerby partnership supports various groups across the City and will look to provide the necessary tools to ensure the woodland remains at the heart of the community. Derby City Pond Warden Association, Spondon Community Association and the Darley Abbey Society are all part of the WildDerby partnership as Friends of wild spaces.
