NHS Derby City Declares Compliance in All Government Standards

NHS Derby City has made final declarations on their performance against standards laid down by the Government available today. We met all of the standards during 2008/09.

The annual health check involves a selfassessment which concentrates on a broad range of issues and aims to measure what matters to people who use and provide healthcare services.

It covers performance against 44 core standards covering a range of activities including patient safety, governance, access to services, the care environment and clinical effectiveness. The Trust’s declaration confirms we have met all of the 44 standards.

The Care Quality Commission will now consider the declarations and use them to help calculate the PCTs’ final performance ratings, which will be published later in the year.

Fresh Start Helps More Than 2,000 Four-Week Quitters

Fresh Start, NHS Derby City’s stop smoking service, has helped 2217 people to quit smoking in the last year, exceeding a target of 2200.
This was for people who had set a quit date and were given support over a four-week period. The number of quitters includes those supported by trained advisers in Fresh Start clinics, as well as in GP practices and community pharmacies.

Su Benton, Fresh Start Team Leader, says: “Our success is down to a committed team of advisors but also highly motivated clients that want to quit smoking. The introduction of the telephone support service has been a huge success and also provides clients with more choice. Stopping smoking is one of the hardest things someone can do but also one of the most rewarding from a health point of view but also financially'.

The target for 2009/10 is 2300 - another challenging goal for the service but one that Fresh Start aim to beat.

Staying Well Expert Patient Programme

Topics covered include exercise, diet, relaxation techniques, complementary therapies and effective communication skills. Each session lasts for two-and-a-half hours and the courses run for six weekly sessions.

The next initial session dates are:
